Easter 2024 according to the new calendar

"Christ is Risen!" - this is not just a greeting in honor of a bright holiday, but also, one might say, the whole essence of the Christian religion. That is why Easter is always celebrated on a grand scale. So online.yua will tell you about this holiday and the traditions associated with it in more detail today. And also - he will tell you some good Easter greetings, both in prose and in poems and pictures.

When Easter is celebrated

Everything is quite complicated here. The fact is that there is an official way of calculating the date of the celebration of Easter — Paschal. To do this, you need to take into account the date of the vernal equinox and the date of the first spring full moon after it. Besides, it must be Sunday. And, according to the Orthodox tradition, Easter should be celebrated only and exclusively after the Jewish holiday of Pesach. In the Catholic tradition, there is no such restriction, so Easter can come much earlier for Catholics. Which, in fact, is happening in 2024.

So, according to the Catholic tradition, Easter in Ukraine is celebrated on March 31. And according to the Orthodox — May 5 (since the previously mentioned Pesach lasts from April 22 to 30). That is, yes, the difference is more than a month. And that's quite normal.

History of the Easter holiday

History of the Easter holiday

Easter itself is probably the oldest purely Christian holiday. After all, according to the records, it was started to be celebrated by the apostles — disciples of Jesus Christ, perhaps in the first years after all those significant events. And then their students too. However, disagreements began almost immediately. Some people celebrated Easter exclusively in conjunction with the Jewish holiday Pesach, some only on the 14th of the month of Nisan, and in the Roman Church they even invented a special scheme for calculating the date, which was later called "Paschal".

Attempts to reconcile all these traditions began at the end of the II century, but success was achieved only at the First Ecumenical Council in 325. It was then that the official principles of "Easter" were adopted, which, however, did not prevent the western and eastern branches of the Christian church from using different schemes. And it was only in the 6th century AD that a single "Easter" for all Christians — "Alexandrian" — was finally established. Which lasted until 1582, when the Roman Catholic Church officially switched to a new calendar, in connection with which it changed its principles of celebrating Easter. Actually, it is from that moment that Catholics and Orthodox celebrate this event according to different systems, sometimes with a difference of a month.

As for Ukraine, Easter in our country continues to be calculated according to the rules of the "Alexandrian Paschalia", even though in 2024 all dates have shifted to correspond to the Gregorian calendar.

Traditions for Easter

Traditions for Easter

Of course, a huge number of various traditions have formed around such an ancient and important holiday. Both local and general. As for Ukraine, it is believed that the following should be done on Easter

  • Say hello correctly. The same classic "Christ is risen — truly risen!" And triple kisses on the cheek between loved ones and friends.

  • Collect "Easter basket". This is a wicker basket, necessarily decorated with an embroidered towel, candles and willow twigs. It is in it that the paska and eggs are laid, as well as the food that will be eaten later during lunch.

  • Spend Easter lunch. It's lunch, not dinner. And yes, he is quite frugal. The main thing is not to emphasize the use of alcohol in the process.

  • Bake paska or kulich. Yes, these are different things. Kulich is a product made of dough, and paska is made of cheese. But their ritual meaning is absolutely the same.

  • Decorate the eggs. Krashanka — purely monochromatic coloring, for example, in onion peel or other dye. Pysanky is a concrete painting of an egg with paints. Krapanka — painting using melted wax. Scratches are scratches of some pattern on the eggshell.

  • Sing folk songs. That is, not only church thematic psalms, but also folk art. Such songs are called "grooves".

And here's what you can't do on Easter

  • Swear and argue. As, after all, during all major Christian holidays. It is also not possible to condemn others, even with arguments. Both in the face and behind the back.

  • Engage in physical labor and housework. That is, all food should be prepared in advance, and the apartment should be organized.

  • Throw away what was consecrated in the church. That is, even the shell from the Easter eggs should not be sent to the trash can, but it is better to bury or burn it somewhere separately.

  • Go to the bathhouse, cut your hair. So get yourself in order in advance.

  • Visiting cemeteries or commemorating the dead. After all, this is a holiday of resurrection, not death.

Signs for Easter

Everything is complicated here, because due to the floating date of Easter, the national calendar is a little off. After all, it is difficult to imagine "night frosts" for Easter 2024, which falls on May 5. But for other years it could well be relevant. So if you are interested in folk signs, it is better to tie them to a specific day. As for May 5, the situation here is as follows:

  • Clear weather — To a good harvest. However, there is also a thunderstorm.

  • The sun is shining and there are no clouds, but the tulips closed early — before the rapid change of weather.

  • The north wind will bring cold, and the west will bring rain.
