The science that studies human behavior and mind is psychology. It is the psychologist who must understand human thinking, behavior, know how the brain functions, and also predict the patient's emotional and personal development. In order to study various aspects of human life, a psychologist must take into account various factors of a person's existence, thoughts and actions. Psychology is a science that is very closely intertwined with medicine and social sciences, so it belongs to the category of cross-cutting sciences. In Ukraine, there is even a professional holiday - psychologist's day.
When is the psychologist's day and a brief history of the development of psychology
"Psyche" is the Greek word from which the term "psychology" comes, translated as "breath", "spirit", "soul". “Ology” is the study or science.
This is a fairly young field of science, the greatest achievements in psychology have taken place during the last one hundred and fifty years. However, some historical facts indicate that psychology was mentioned as early as the time of Ancient Greece — that is, five hundred years before our era. Such great thinkers and philosophers as Socrates, Plato and Aristotle lived and worked in those times. Philosophers discussed such topics that modern psychology is currently studying. What exactly were they talking about:
About memory;
Freedom of will;
Influence of nature and upbringing;
Attractiveness;
Other topics.
In the beginning, two directions of psychology emerged — structuralism (initiated by Wilhelm Wundt) and functionalism (William James). It was the beginning of the nineteenth century. Those who introduced psychoanalysis are considered to be Sigmund Freud. He began practicing talk therapy to explore unknown motivations and desires.
Carl Jung was the first to establish analytical psychology (he confidently asserted that most human suffering is a mental or psychological disorder).
Aaron Beck - he created the direction of cognitive-behavioral therapy. When a person is going through a difficult life situation, thoughts can be inaccurate and not correspond to reality. Beck claimed that the therapy he developed helped people identify when they had thought distortions, change their thinking, and solve problems.
There are four main goals of psychology:
Describing behavior is the first task of psychology, thanks to which researchers can find (general) laws of human behavior. Example: Pavlov developed the law of learning by studying the behavior of dogs;
Explanation — the psychologist's attempt to explain how and why this or that action occurs on the part of the patient, there are theories that can explain any behavior;
Forecasting is the attempt to predict future human behavior based on some research. For example, the association of a negative result with a stimulus can lead to a phobia;
Modification - attempts to change or at least control human behavior, treat anxiety and other psychosomatic disorders using theories based on conditioned behavior.
All-Ukrainian psychologist's day is celebrated in the spring. The Day of the Psychologist in Ukraine began to be celebrated in 2004, this holiday was initiated by the National Association of Practical Psychologists and Social Workers of Ukraine. April 23 is the psychologist's day in Ukraine, this date was not chosen by chance - on this day in 1896, the famous Ukrainian psychologist H. S. Kostyuk was born, who made a huge contribution to the development of psychological science and education in Ukraine.
Psychologist's Day 2024 and celebration traditions
On the professional holiday — psychologist's day, it is customary to honor the merits in the development of society, as well as the popularization of psychology, of all those involved in this profession. On this occasion, various events are held in Ukraine:
Conferences, workshops, trainings and various seminars;
Exhibitions, presentations of new achievements, festivals and forums;
Various festive events - banquets, concerts and flash mobs.
