February 6 - Safer Internet Day 2024

It is useless to deny that the Internet has forever entered our lives. This is neither good nor bad - it is a new reality with its pros and cons. Quite dangerous disadvantages. After all, most people still do not understand that violating the basic rules of digital security can really harm them. And in order to remind them of this once again, the International Safe Internet Day was invented. And Guide Online will now tell you about it, as well as the traditions associated with it, in more detail.

When is Safer Internet Day 2024

In general, the very idea of introducing a day dedicated to digital security arose in the European Commission back in 2004. But as you already well know, the period from the emergence of an idea to its implementation is very long there. Therefore, the international Safe Internet Day was officially celebrated only in 2012, when the US Department of Homeland Security and a number of non-profit organizations, such as European SchoolNet and Insafe, joined the cause. It was decided to choose a floating date - the second Tuesday of February, so it is new every year. And in 2024, Safer Internet Day will be February 6.

The main goal of the Internet Security Day 2024

The main task of the International Safe Internet Day was and remains to improve network security skills among children and adolescents. But in our time, it has also been joined by "more specific" tasks - teaching basic human rights, methods of combating "hate speech", rules of network etiquette and remote communication. That is, creating a favorable digital environment. After all, now most fraudsters and criminals use not so much software hacking and data theft methods that even children already know how to deal with, but "social engineering". And this is where creating a safe environment in which toxic, provocative or downright criminal behavior is simply impossible can help a lot.

Safe Internet Day celebration

As already mentioned, the International Safe Internet Day is not so much a holiday as an occasion to once again remind about the importance of the basics of network security. Therefore, various lectures, seminars, courses, open lessons and other thematic events dedicated to network security are traditionally held on this day. Including remote. They are mainly aimed at children and young people, as the most vulnerable categories of users. However, something similar is being done among the older generation, who also have huge problems with Internet security.

In Ukraine, the #HOT INTERNET CENTER plays the main role in organizing similar events and translating content into Ukrainian. On his website - betterinternetcentre.org, you can find a huge amount of useful information on psychology, parenting and, of course, network security. After all, to be truly protected online, you need to be aware of possible risks all the time, not just one day a year.

Conclusion

World Safer Internet Day is the best way to remind people that the safety of each individual on the network depends primarily on himself. No matter how reliable the sites are, no one will save your account on them if you used the password 1111. No matter how perfect antiviruses are, they will not help if you download suspicious programs yourself. And no matter how the state fights against fraudsters and criminals, it will not help you if you voluntarily give them your personal data or information that can compromise you. So Guide Online reminds you that: "Your network security is your personal responsibility."
