May 12 is World Nurse's Day

There are many professions in the world that are important for humanity, always in demand and irreplaceable, among them is the profession of a nurse. Everyone is well aware that the performance of any medical procedures should be entrusted to professional specialists. A nurse is a person who qualitatively fulfills the doctor's orders, not only the health, but also the life of the patient often depends on her work. The representatives of this profession certainly deserve their own professional holiday, which is celebrated every year on May 12, the birthday of the founder of the nursing profession, Florence Nightingale.

World Nurse's Day: the idea of origin and historical facts

Nursing is a profession that appeared long before receiving a specific title. Women and girls have always cared for the sick, weak or injured, it was considered quite natural. In the days of Kyivan Rus, the work of nurses for patients was performed by nuns of monasteries. The first hospital appeared in the tenth century, its founder was the well-known princess Olga, the patients were also cared for by women.

In Europe, the "dirty" work, that's how caring for the sick was considered, was performed by men. A well-known British woman, Florence Nightingale, managed to change the stereotypical view of this profession. She was born on May 12, 1820, in a wealthy British family. The young girl had a good education, knew several languages, was interested in philosophy and politics. But she spent most of her time helping poor and sick people from the villages around the family estate. Florence decided for herself that she should help the sick and expressed a desire to become a nurse. The parents were categorically against such a choice of their daughter, a young lady with her status should think about a successful marriage. After young Florence Nightingale turned down a rich suitor, she was given permission to go to Germany to be educated at the Institute of Protestant Deaconesses.

In 1851, Lady Nightingale received the desired knowledge to work as a nurse. 1853 - Florence worked in a private London clinic. During the Crimean War, which began in October 1853, a volunteer unit of nurses was organized in Nightingale. They went with Florence to the war zone. With the help of the professional work of the detachment in the Constantinople hospital, the mortality rate of wounded soldiers has significantly decreased. In 1860, F. Nightingale founded her own school for training nurses, which was located at the St. Thomas Hospital.

World Nurse's Day

International Nurse's Day — the idea of introducing this holiday came from an employee of the US Ministry of Health, Dorothy Sutherland. She sent a corresponding message to the president with a request to proclaim Nurse's Day - it was 1953 on the street. The date began to be celebrated as early as 1965 at the level of the International Council of Nurses. Already in 1974, this organization declared an official holiday - May 12, Nurse's Day. Historical events that preceded the creation of the holiday:

  • 1836 — the first official school of nurses in Germany was founded, it was opened by priest Theodor Fliedner;

  • 1860 - a nursing school was opened in London, Florence Nightingale did it;

  • 1872 — the USA, a nursing school was opened at a hospital for women and children in Boston;

  • 1895 — an educational institution for nurses was founded in Lviv;

  • 1899 - The International Council of Nurses was founded, an organization whose goal is to improve the competence of nurses and provide the highest level of medical services, as well as a professional approach to health care throughout the world.

The purpose of Nurse's Day is to draw attention to the important mission of nurses in society. The role of a medical nurse is irreplaceable in the present time - various diseases, wars, pandemics. Nurses' Day in Ukraine is also celebrated in May - various festive events, concerts are held, management congratulates its subordinates, and ceremonial awarding of diplomas and gifts is held. In Ukraine, the development of nursing was helped in his time by an outstanding surgeon, Mykola Pirogov, who taught nurses the basics of caring for the wounded. The first known Ukrainian nurse was Dasha Sevastopolska, the real name of this woman is still unknown, she got her "working nickname" when she helped the wounded in Sevastopol.

When will Nurse's Day be celebrated this year? The holiday falls on the weekend, namely on Sunday. To choose this particular profession, you should pay attention to the advantages and disadvantages. Among the advantages: great demand in the labor market, the ability to provide first aid, the possibility of retraining as a cosmetologist or pharmacist. Certain disadvantages: emotional and physical stress, high risk of infection with various types of diseases, low wages (in Ukraine). Nurse's Day 2024, a holiday when you should congratulate all the nurses you know.
